Precautionary suspension of Hidden Valley operations following PNG earthquake

15 December 2011

Newcrest advises that the Hidden Valley Joint Venture temporarily suspended operations at the Hidden Valley mine in Papua New Guinea (PNG) yesterday evening as a precautionary measure following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake near Lae.

There have been no injuries and investigations have identified no major damage.
Mining activities recommenced this morning and milling operations are expected to resume after structural and electrical inspections in the processing plant have been completed.

Newcrest and Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited operate Hidden Valley in a 50:50 Joint Venture.

Newcrest’s Lihir operation in PNG has not been impacted by the earthquake.
