Newcrest Mining appoints Papua New Guinea Country Manager

07 July 2011

Newcrest Mining Limited today announced the appointment of a country manager to represent its interests in Papua New Guinea.

Prominent Papua New Guinean, Mr Peter Aitsi MBE, is to take up the newly created Country Manager role for Newcrest which will be based in Port Moresby.

The role has been established by Newcrest in recognition of the significance of Papua New Guinea to the company following the merger with Lihir Gold last year and the increased activity in the Morobe Province where Newcrest, in a joint venture with Harmony Gold, is operating the Hidden Valley gold mine and undertaking further studies associated with the Wafi Golpu project.

In announcing the appointment, Newcrest Chief Executive Officer, Greg Robinson, said Mr Aitsi would be responsible for the company’s relationships with government, business and community leaders in PNG.  He will also manage the Newcrest corporate office teams in Port Moresby and Kavieng.

“This is an important role to Newcrest and one which reflects our growing presence and confidence in Papua New Guinea,” Mr Robinson said.

Mr Aitsi said he looked forward to developing the Newcrest presence in PNG and to working with Newcrest PNG Government Relations Manager, Borone Isana and the teams in both of Port Moresby and Kavieng.

Mr Aitsi takes up the role in early September.
