Newcrest Mining Limited announced today that Craig Jones has been appointed Executive General Manager Projects, with responsibility for the development and construction of all major Newcrest-managed capital projects across the group. He will join the Company’s Executive Committee in his new role.
Mr Jones is currently General Manager Projects, with accountability for the oversight of major capital projects, and reporting to the former EGM Projects. He has been leading the project completion stage of the US$1.3 billion Lihir Island MOPU expansion in Papua New Guinea, which will lift annual production to over one million ounces of gold.
Mr Jones’ background was predominantly with Rio Tinto in the projects area, before joining Newcrest almost four years ago. During his time with Newcrest, he has held senior project roles and has also been General Manager of Cadia Valley Operations.
Mr Jones’ appointment follows the resignation of Ron Douglas, after more than five years with Newcrest. Mr Douglas’ resignation comes as the Company’s major expansion projects at Cadia East and Lihir are nearing completion. Both projects remain on budget and schedule.
Newcrest Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Greg Robinson thanked Mr Douglas for his considerable contribution to the Company during this time, particularly progressing both major projects to a strong position to deliver successfully for Newcrest.
“We wish Ron well with his future endeavours,” said Mr Robinson.
“I would also like to congratulate Craig on his promotion. He is well-equipped to head the Newcrest Projects team, after making significant contributions to the Cadia Valley Operations, the Lihir MOPU expansion and other major projects.”
Mr Jones’ appointment is effective immediately.
